Description
Historian Van Allen (Indiana U.) resolves the two contradictory images of Indiana poet Riley (1849-1916). To some he was a proper, kindly, and beloved Victorian poet whose verses about nature and children were popular in his day and have remained classics. Others see him as a drunken versifier whose claim to fame is corny doggerel that no one reads anymore. Little Orphan Annie, When the Frost is on the Punkin, and The Raggedy Man are among his better known poems.
