Indiana University basketball had always been an institution. It was a program synonymous with not only success on the court but with running a clean program off of it. In college basketball terms, Indiana did things the right way. It graduated its players, it didn’t cheat and it made its alumni proud.

The Hoosiers had won two national championships with Branch McCracken at the helm and three more in the 29-year tenure of Bob Knight. The program boasted the last undefeated national champion with the 32-0 1976 Hoosiers. Indiana trumpeted a tradition that included 43 All-Americans and a stretch of 18 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances through the early 00s.

Then shortcuts and impermissible phone calls in the recruiting process committed by Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson beginning with the 06-07 season brought IU basketball to its knees. TERRY HUTCHENS knows Indiana University basketball. For the past 15 years he has worked as the IU football and basketball beat writer for the Indianapolis Star. Hes covered the team from the Bob Knight era through today and has worked as a sportswriter for more than 35 years.

Five times in the last six years and four years in a row, Terry has been honored as Indianas Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. Terry has written four books and is the author of Hep Remembered.

Foreword by Calbert Cheaney former IU basketball player whos four years playing for Bobby Knights Hoosiers was followed by thirteen years in the NBA. Calbert Cheaney is currently Director of Operations/Internal and External Player Development for the University of Indiana.
